The Refuge: A House for a better future

Together we are working to build a sustainable tiny house for a refugee family to comfortably and safely live in. Our goal is for this house to be space and energy conservative as well as being easy to move on wheels. We are into our second term of this class, and the project is on its way to becoming physical. We are very close to being able to start construction on our trailer, starting with the process of making it safe to build a house on, and stabilizing the trailer itself. The house will be approximately 160 square feet plus a sleeping loft. It will include one loft, which is enough space to fit one or two people. It will have a kitchen and a bathroom with running water which can be attached to water and electricity hookups at any trailer park or campsite.

In class, we have divided up into eight different groups to work together to get this project on its feet. We have three groups focusing on the physical aspect of the project, those groups are: Parking, Trailer, and Construction. Along with those we have Fundraising, Outreach, and Planning & resources which are focusing on the social aspect of the project. We have two coordinating groups, the Refugee Coordinators and the Sustainability Coordinators. With the wide variety of groups, we are able to cover all aspect of the project that need to be taken into account.
